An educational estimate — not advice.
62vs70.com helps you understand the trade-offs of claiming Social Security at different ages. It’s a starting point for your own planning, not a substitute for professional guidance or an official benefit determination.
Not professional advice
The information and estimates on this site are provided for general educational purposes only. They are not financial, tax, legal, insurance, or investment advice, are not a substitute for advice from a qualified professional, and don’t create any advisory relationship. When to claim Social Security has lifelong financial consequences — before you act, confirm your situation with the Social Security Administration or a fee-only fiduciary advisor.
Estimates, not determinations
The calculator produces an estimate, not an official benefit determination or a guarantee of any payment. In particular:
- Your PIA. Results are only as accurate as the Primary Insurance Amount you enter. The most reliable figure comes from your ssa.gov My Account; estimates from earnings history alone are approximate.
- No COLA in the chart. The breakeven chart shows cumulative benefits in today’s dollars (no cost-of-living adjustment) so the crossing point stays crisp. Your actual dollars will rise with future COLAs, which also raises the value of delaying.
- Life expectancy is an assumption. Personal breakeven depends entirely on how long you live, which no one can know. Treat the breakeven age as “if you live to your assumed age,” and use the sensitivity slider to see how it shifts.
- Taxability and the earnings test use current federal thresholds and limits; your actual result depends on your full return and household circumstances.
Time-sensitive and subject to change
This tool models current Social Security law. Some figures update every year — the earnings-test limits, the PIA bend points, and the annual cost-of-living adjustment are announced each October for the following year — and the law itself can change. The Full Retirement Age table is statutory and does not change. If you have a government pension, note that the Social Security Fairness Act (signed early 2025) changed how the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset apply; verify your current situation with the SSA. We do our best to keep figures current, but we make no warranty of accuracy or completeness.
Verify before you rely on it
For an official estimate and to claim, use your ssa.gov My Account and the SSA retirement planner. For benefit taxability, consult the IRS. We accept no liability for decisions made based on this site. See our terms of use.
